Avery had her first trip to the dentist today. Kurt took her and said she did great! I'm sure in large part that was due to the awesome abilities of Dr. Oakley and his staff:)

Again, so pleased with Steph's pictures. The girls were not on best behavior that day, so I was just happy that we found ONE to use for Christmas cards! She is a miracle worker.

It was cold, no one was enthused, for some reason Kurt does not find it "fun" to take family pictures??....so we had a little bit of this.

But these make it all worth it.

Hannah is 6 months

Here's what she's been up to:
Started belly laughing (4 1/2 mo.)
1st time in crib w/out the snuggler (5 mo.)
1st time in Jumperoo (5 mo.)
1st time to eat cereal (5 1/2 mo.)
1st time in booster to eat (6 mo.)

Not crawling yet and we are fine with that!! She is still mostly a happy baby, though will let you when she's upset....like when she can't see anyone to give her attention. Doing great with cereal - cried a lot during the 1st few feedings because she wasn't getting it fast enough. LOVES Avery, and Avery is finally getting used to having her around:) Avery still doesn't pay her much attention, but is actually most sweet to her when no one else is around. If I step out of the room, I'll come back to hear Avery having a nice little conversation with her....makes me laugh, and smile.

Hannah is 4 months! (18 weeks)

After 3 1/2 months of colic and discomfort, it really seems as though we have a completely different baby. Praise the Lord - she is happy now most of the time and is doing very well with eating & sleeping. Some recent accomplishments are taking her 1st bottle (14 weeks), moving to her crib/nursery (16 weeks), and sleeping for longer periods at night - probably due to less noise & distraction in her nursery. She has developed more of an eating routine - approx. 5 times/day & 2-3/night, and sleeping - approx. 7-8p to 7-8a (waking 2-3 times to eat).

Her personality is very sweet & she's become much more laid back - though she will still let us know if she's unhappy. She's got quite a loud cry and often makes high-pitched "bird" noises just for the fun of it. It is a joy to watch her grow & change each day!

Avery started pre-school this year, and goes Mon/Wed from 9-1. We were thrilled to learn that Harper would be in her class, & we love her teachers and her other classmates.

With a September birthday, she's the oldest in her class and her teachers tell us she is motherly and the class greeter - for those who have been a little more timid upon arrival:)

Parents were invited for a "come-&-go" the 1st day. It was a great way to create a smooth transition.

Our first 2 months with Hannah has been quite a bit different than with Avery.

Avery was a very laid-back, easy going, mostly happy infant....slept often, cried rarely...made Kurt & I think we were amazing parents:) So, we figured we wouldn't be quite so lucky with a "2nd".

And we were right.

Hannah was diagnosed with Colic in her first few weeks as a result of her frequent crying (and she's loud!) & upset tummy. Poor girl, it's so hard knowing that she's in pain and there's nothing Kurt or I can do to help her. Doctors tell us she will likely improve drastically by 3 months, and we're living daily with that hope - for her sake way more than ours!

But when this girl is happy, she's as sweet as she can be. And I sure do cherish every little moment with her.

How did we get from "Hannah's first few days" to "1 month" so quickly?!? Just proof of the lack of free time we have right now, I suppose. Life with 2 children has been 99% wonderful and we are getting more & more adjusted each day to the new routine.

Here's some of what we've been up to...

Aunt Abby & Uncle Pablo came to visit during Hannah's first week home. They entertained Avery, helped with chores around the house, and kept us sane!

Mam came to visit for a week and was also a huge help...playing with Avery, making us meals, doing laundry, etc. She gave Avery a tea set and they had a big girl tea party one afternoon....Avery loved it!

Grammie and Biggie have also been awesome as we adjust to the new routine. Avery has loved spending time with them and we are so thankful for the assistance!

Doctor visits...and more doctor visits. Hannah is jaundice and fussy more than we think is "normal" (probably due to reflux or gas) but is otherwise a very healthy & happy baby.

Due to her being jaundice, we've had to get Hannah's biliruben levels checked pretty frequently - which requires a trip to the hospital & a heal prick for the blood test. Poor girl, she takes it like a champ.

Avery's adjustment has taken some time, but she is doing so much better and really loves her little sister! She is the first to introduce "Baby Hannah" (& with much excitement) to each of our visitors.
As can be expected, the past month has left her exhausted...physically & emotionally. And Mommy & Daddy can relate:)

Avery has loved going to ballet this year. Her good friend Lauren had a class at the same time so she also enjoyed seeing the Guinns each week, and often going to "Old" McDonald's afterward.

The ballet recital was held one week after Hannah was born... So though a hectic time for our family, it was a nice way to give Avery some extra attention. And of course she loved every minute!

37-week update

At 3 1/2 weeks away from our due date, I am feeling great and just continuing to get final things organized, lists made, etc. We are super excited to meet baby Hannah Alice, but happy to have a little more prep time.

My doc said today that Hannah's head is a little bit lower now, but otherwise everything looks pretty normal for this stage. Not expecting an early baby at this point.

This morning, I asked Avery if she wanted her hair in a 1/2-pony (tail) or pony. Her response - "Um....how about a 1/2-caff Grande?" Sure enough, when I asked her to repeat herself, she said the same thing. Seriously?

We celebrated Easter with Daddy a little early because he had to work on Sunday...
The weekend's activitites began Friday night at the Good Friday service at our church, which was super! Great weather for an outside fish fry and awesome worship and message.
Before the Easter egg hunt at church on Saturday morning, we gave Avery her Easter basket and new chair. Not surprisingly, her favorite gift was a bunny gum ball machine:) *Only 2 at a time and she actually chews & spits it out when she's finished!

Sunday afternoon, we met daddy at the airport for a quick visit during a break he had back in Houston. Avery loved watching the airplanes take off.

The eggs were prepared a few weeks ago by Aunt Abby & Uncle Pablo. What a treat to have specially-designed eggs just for her!

What's in a Name??

Hannah Alice Leslie

Her first name was baby #2, then baby biscuit (with no name chosen, we somehow came up with that over family dinner one night...), but we have finally settled on Hannah Alice Leslie. And we love it!
Hannah's story in the Bible (1 Samuel 1-2:11) is one of humility, obedience & sacrifice amidst challenging circumstances. It is a wonderful testament of God's blessings to His children, and means just that - God's grace. Hannah was in the running of names we really liked, but after our experience with my bladder tumor in January we felt confident that it was a perfect fit for this baby girl. If not for her, we would not have discovered the tumor through the ultrasound. And if not for the Lord's presence in our lives, we surely would not have felt the immense peace & comfort through it all. Peace in knowing that He is in control, no matter the circumstances. Comfort from the overwhelming support of friends and family during those few crazy weeks. And JOY in experiencing how He works in & through very unique situations.

Then Hannah prayed and said:
"My heart rejoices in the LORD;
in the LORD my horn is lifted high...
² There is no one holy like the LORD;
there is no one besides you, there is no Rock like our God."

Alice also has special meaning because it is Kurt's grandmother's (Muttie's) name. Avery's middle name (Abigail) is after my sister, so we wanted to choose a name from Kurt's side this time. Muttie is Kurt's last living grandparent and we adore her - and her name!

And Leslie, well....you just can't go wrong with such a great last name:)

Our good friend Mark has taken a job in South Korea for the next year, and is leaving tomorrow. He has become a regular visitor of our house, especially in the past few months, so it will be a little strange and sad not to have him around.

Some of the things we will miss about Mark - his sneaky poker tactics, his sweet dance moves, his fine flowing hair, the playtime and entertainment he provides Avery, the way he pronounces Avery - "A-ver-ee" vs. the more common "A-vree", friendly debates with Nat, and just a good-'ol friend.

It's a Sister!

We had our Ultrasound appointment today (approx 19 weeks) and found out that baby #2 is a GIRL! Everything looks healthy at this point, so for that we are very grateful. It sure does make it more real now to know a little bit more about our precious baby. And fun to think that Avery will have a sister. Kurt took it well (he's such a great "girl" daddy)....though I think he's still holding out for hope of one day having a baby on his team - hmmm... We love you sweet baby girl #2!

Secret Santa

This year, Christmas was made even more exciting with some visits from a Secret Santa. Starting on the 1st day of Christmas, we received a package each morning (for 12 days) on our doorstep. Each gift included a beautiful ornament for the Days of Christmas as well as a gift card.

The first day was a fun surprise and of course we had no idea it would continue, & continue. As the days passed, I became VERY interested in who this Secret Santa could be, and confused as to why anyone would go to such lengths to provide such a creative & generous gift. Kurt even woke early one morning to stake out near the front door and catch the mysterious "nice person". But somehow, they came & left without him noticing....Note: Don't hire Kurt as your next Security guard.

Finally, on Christmas Day, my dear friend Steph revealed herself. This is the same Steph with 4 children & therefore plenty of activities and work to keep her busy with her OWN family, especially this time of year. So why did she do it???? I'm not sure, but she is a wonderful, dear friend who does not cease to amaze me with her selfless acts & giving spirit. She is the type of friend who I'd say, "There's no way it could be"....and in the same breath, "Of course it was her!" Steph, I love you and thank God for your friendship & all of our many memories....now which span nearly 20 years!! How is that possible?

What a blessing to be near a child at Christmas-time....as we've begun to teach Avery the meaning and importance of Christmas, it has become even more real to us. To think that God sent His only son to live as an example for us, and to die so that we can be saved from our sin and live an abundant, eternal life....it's hard to grasp how One could love so much. But I'm so grateful that He does.

Here is a recap & highlight of some of our December celebration.

Avery's ballet class performed a dance to Rudolph; I was crying, smiling & laughing all at the same time. At the end of class, the Sugarplum Fairy came to dance & take pictures with the girls.

Steph made these t-shirts for the girls that say, "Future Sugarplum Fairy".

Mama Sarah & Papa Joel had us over with Halle & Lucas. With Katie, they created such a special morning for the kids - complete with stockings, dancing, playing w/ the dogs, and making cookies!

We celebrated Christmas early with Biggie & Grammie so that Kurt could be in town.

Avery & Nat took a pre-Christmas trip to Dallas to visit friends and family.

We met with friends Tobyn, Emily, and their children for dinner. This was our first time to meet Tobyn's new son, Calvin. He is adorable and so sweet.

While with the "greats", Avery helped make finger-printed ornaments for family.

For the Mayo-family Christmas, we went to the Dallas Arboretum and then gathered for soup & dessert dinner. At the Arboretum, we ran into Rudolph...Avery performed her dance for him.

After returning home, we hopped right back in the car for our trip to Kerrville with Kurt's family. On the way, we continued our now 3-year tradition of stopping in Johnson City to enjoy their beautiful Christmas lights.

The town's Electric Company has every tree lit on their property. It's an amazing sight.

The Children's Christmas Eve service at our church is such a joy for the children...and just as much for the parents:) We got there early to save seats, so Avery had a ball dancing & playing around.

Prayers for Daddy

Every night when we say our bedtime prayers with Avery, we pray for Daddy. If he's away at work, we ask for safety and an enjoyable trip. If he's home, we are very thankful for our family time together. Avery has started praying on her own a bit, so last night her prayer was, "Dear Lord, thank you for (pause, pause)....Daddy home."
What a wonderful way to end the day!

We went to Costa Rica (sans Avery) in early October with Kurt's parents & his brother/wife. It was a wonderful trip, beautiful country & animals, and memorable time spent with the adult Leslie family.

Our resort was an eco-lodge built in the rainforest, so we were within feet of gorgeous birds, monkeys, and several other amazing animals - most of which I've only seen in zoos.

2. We are expecting baby #2!!!! (& just one of them)

Just after we celebrated Avery's 2nd birthday, we found out that we will be celebrating another "second" soon! We are all very excited and feel blessed beyond measure that God has given us the great gift of raising another child to know Him.
It's still very early, but Nat's 8-week appointment was today and all went well. The due date is set for May 23, 2010. We would be honored for you to pray for a healthy start to life for baby Leslie #2.

Avery's first ballet class went great! She ran right in when the doors opened and didn't look back. What a joy it was to watch her run and "dance" and learn new things!
Lauren has ballet at the same time (different class) so we came back to our house afterwards to have lunch & play.

No More Monkeys Jumping on the Bed!!

Who knew that I would get through my entire childhood w/out a broken bone (w/ exception of maybe my toe), and my daughter breaks her forearm before she turns 2!?!
And so we begin a new part of the adventure in parenting - though I hope this is not a frequent occurance.

Last Wednesday night, Kurt & I were getting Avery ready for her bath and playing (she was jumping) on the bed. Kurt & I were on opposites sides of the bed, but she fell and neither of us could get to her before she slipped backwards off the bed.
Needless to say, she broke both bones in her forearm. Kurt & I felt terrible - of course - but we have come to accept that you can never be too careful, and at the same time that things can happen even if you are "right there".

While driving to the hospital, we asked for God's healing & strength, and wisdom for the doctors. We most requested that He keep her from too much pain. And He so graciously answered our prayer! Avery stopped crying soon after we arrived to the ER, and she remained in good spirits most of the time we were there (talking, laughing....NO signs of having just broken a bone). Another praise was my mom bringing some "minor" necessities (diapers, clothes for Avery, etc) that we left as we rushed out the door, and the great staff that cared for her. All were very accommodating and comforting to Avery...and her nervous parents!

Avery got her pink permanent cast on Monday and she has gone full-force ahead since then. She is expected only to wear the cast for 2-3 weeks, because of the more-speedy healing of childrens' bones. We continue to be amazed at how quickly & well children adjust to change...and pain! Though I know this is such a minor thing compared to many things that people endure, it been a good reminder to me that it is impossible to get through ANY tough situation - big or small - with peace & joy w/out trusting that God is in control and able to provide us exactly what we need to get through it.

I made a dress for a friend's birthday this week, so I decided to make a duplicate for Avery. That's 4 total, including my first 2.

Same pattern, different fabric. It's a step-by-step process, but I'm loving this sewing stuff!

My mother-in-law suggested I think of something creative & consistent to add to each of my "projects", and I decided on heart-shaped buttons. She gave me these old hand-painted buttons, so I found it only fitting to add this to my first on-my-own dress for Avery.

These labels were also passed down, from my grandmother. I love them.

Quick Dallas Trip

Kerrville get-away

It's been a little while since we visited Kurt's parents in Kerrville, so we took a few days to get away. We didn't get many pictures, but probably our most memorable events were playing in the sprinklers...

...and the rain!

Oh, and Nat got an old sewing machine from one of Mam's friends! Very exciting!

Mam said I had a wear a Moo-moo to learn how to sew - You're the boss Mam.

I guess the moo-moo worked! With Mam's help, I made this dress for Avery. I love it! My Mimama will be SO proud!

It's a shame I didn't get a picture of the bee sting on my bum & Mam's scorpion sting on her leg - the occurance happening w/in seconds of each other - what!?! That story is for another day.

Vintage Easter

Avery's Easter smock dress was one that her Aunt Abby or Mommy (we can't remember) wore as a little girl. It was made by her very own great-Mimama, so these pictures are extra special to us.

Another vintage item - her Aunt Abby's easter egg basket, also made by Mimama.

I love this stuff! What a lost art - and I think I know why...I started cross-stitching a few months ago and it's time consuming, even the beginner level. We, younger folk, have become so used to instant gratification that it's become quite a challenge for us (maybe I'm just speaking for myself) to be patient & wait for...well, most anything.

Thanks Mimama for your gifts of love & sacrifice of time. You are such an inspiration to me and all who know you!

I love Easter, even more so now than when I got to hunt for eggs as a kid...because now Easter means so much more to me. It means that though I am a sinner, God has saved me from myself. Though my past is stained & dirty - and I will continue to fall way short of perfection, God's forgiveness has made me white as snow! The more I have studied and learned about the life of Jesus, the more I am in awe of Him. Because of His perfect love, we are set free!

This morning, we went to the Easter Egg Hunt at church. Wow, what an experience! Avery caught on pretty quickly...but then she started grabbing eggs & putting them in other kids' baskets. I guess that's better than taking them:)

It was fun to see several friends there!

Dallas & Back

Nothing beats a weekend filled with wonderful friends & family....and this weekend was just that for the Leslie crew.

After a drive up to Dallas & a quick stop by Abby's apartment, Natalie stayed the night with the Eckenrodes Friday night. Kurt & Avery stayed home to welcome the family for a weekend visit.

On Saturday morning - Natalie, Meg & her girls took a walk, then stopped by Starbucks before Nat headed to the Rissmiller's then on to a shower honoring Em & her new baby boy (#2), Tucker.

We went to play with the Guinns last week.....super fun as always!! I left my camera at home, so leave it to the mom of 4 to take pictures for us:)

Steph had cookie dough for the kids to make their own Easter Cookies - with icing! Yum!
Avery started the day wearing a dress with these pink leggings....but when she started playing, we realized that she still had some room to grow into the dress...straps kept falling down. So, she got to borrow a Disney World shirt. That with this bucket hat made for a really stylish get-up.
Just for fun, here is a pic of Avery from this time last year. She was approximately 4 months in this picture, and wearing a onesie Steph made for her: "Avery + Lauren = BFF".

Avery was 18-months-old on March 15th, and we had her 18-mo check up with Dr. Yau this week. Here are her stats and recent milestones:

25 1/2 lbs. (75th percentile)

34 1/2 inches (95%)

18 in head circ (75%)

What she's been up to.....

Eating - Avery has consistently been a good eater. She eats most everything and a favorite word at the table is "more". She's not mastered a utensil yet; still much prefers using her hands. Favorite foods include: yogurt, cheese, cheerios/crackers, sandwich meat, most all fruit, green peas. Oh, and no more bottle - she dropped this shortly after 1-year. Next goal is dropping the pacifier - that one might be more tricky.

This picture is proof of eating (look at that belly) as well as the "pappy", a.k.a. pacifier.

Kissing - She will give hugs & kisses upon request now (depending on her mood of course), and she will usually blow kisses when she's telling someone goodbye.

Playing/Reading - Kurt recently finished Avery's bookshelves and we turned our study into her playroom. She loves it! Of all her toys and activities though, reading is probably still her favorite entertainment. Awesome:)

Dancing/Music - A close 2nd to reading is Avery's love for dancing and music. After a favorite song (or book), she'll say "again, again!"

Talking - Kurt & I counted this week....over 100 words. Not all of these are recognizable to more than Kurt & me yet, but she's doing better & better each day. It's just amazing how much their little brains soak in, and in such a short span of time. Most of Avery's vocabulary are single words, but she does use some phrases. For memory's sake, some recent word additions include: cow (she has said "moo" for a long time, but is just now starting to know the difference between animal names and sound they make), turkey, cracker, outside, plane (Kurt loves this!), lotion, bless you, I don't know, belly button.

Outside - Loves being anywhere outside, playing at the park (swing & slide), in the backyard, and she still does really well riding in the stroller during my Stroller Fit classes a few times per week.

Sleeping - She's still a great sleeper. She's dropped her morning nap, takes a 2-4 hr. afternoon nap, and 12-13 hours at night. Night-time routine is usually dinner around 5:30p, bath @ 6:30p, play/book, then bed between 7:30-8p.m. Avery's favorite is still when her daddy rocks her to sleep, then down she goes with her animals (George, Sprinkles & Lulu), a blanket & her pacifier.

Avery went full-force into tantrums at around 15 months, but she's really doing SO MUCH better now that she can communicate more easily. She can still throw a good fit every now & then, but she is overall such a happy and content little girl. My consistent prayer for her is that she find the JOY of the Lord early in life, and that Kurt & I be good models to lead her to that. We have been immensely blessed by her, and look forward to lots of excitement ahead!

Two weeks ago, Avery's cousin Luke Henry - Jackson's brother - was born. Then our great friends, the Rissmillers, welcomed baby Tucker Austin yesterday evening. We can't wait to meet these little guys! This has definitely been a season of momma bellies and newborn babies....I just counted 12 on my calendar from November '08 to May '09 - crazy!?!

We recently headed up to Dallas & had a baby shower at Celebrity Cafe for Kristen and Baby Boy Nelson. It turned out really well!

We met some friends at the park this week and had a great time! Avery takes such awesome naps after playing outside; she really enjoys it. I forgot my camera, but got some pix off the Guinn's blog - thanks Steph!

....though I'm not really a runner anymore.

Avery's cousin, Jackson, finished running a marathon last weekend - yep, that's 26.2 miles! He ran over the course of several weeks and got a super medal when he crossed the finish line. When we talked and I was telling him how excited and proud I was, he said "well, you know...everyone got a medal." Hey, you finish, you win buddy!

p.s. Jackson's baby brother, Luke, is expected to arrive tomorrow.....we can't wait to meet you little guy!! I think you're really gonna like us:)

We've spent some time at the park lately, enjoying the beautiful weather before it turns HOT, HUMID & HORRIBLE. When Avery's not trying to sneak food from her friends, she's loving the park.

Natalie has been "subbing" on occassion at her mom's school (a.k.a. the school where she works), Glen Loch Elementary. This week, Kurt & Avery brought lunch and we dined all together in the Library office, then Avery & Grandma played chase (shhh...don't tell the principal) and read some books before Nat had to get back to work.

My old LLS co-worker & great friend, Des, was married this weekend in Dallas. She & Travis are a wonderful couple and the wedding was a blast - especially fun to catch up with many of my old co-workers, who I LOVE and miss, at the reception. Didn't get any pix of the reception - boo - but here are a few from the rest of the weekend.
